BBC Concert Orchestra
Our mission is simple: to bring inspiring musical experiences to everyone, everywhere.
So how does the BBC Concert Orchestra achieve this? Our versatility is the key.
You’ll hear us on BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night is Music Night most weeks while over on BBC Radio 3 we search out the unusual and quirky, profile classical masterpieces and never forget to entertain. In 2016 as an Associate Orchestra at London’s Southbank Centre we have performed a distinctive range of concerts, including a celebration of award-winning musical theatre, The Oliviers in Concert, an exploration of the emotional world of Shakespeare through music for film and readings, and a concert in collaboration with leading tabla player Zakir Hussain.
Listen out for the orchestra on TV; it’s us on the soundtracks of The Hunt, The Paradise and Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell to name but a few. You’ll see us on the big screen too, in the film of Alan Bennett’s The Lady in the Van.
We are at the BBC Proms every summer, both in the Royal Albert Hall and Hyde Park for Proms in the Park and love to get out and about in the UK including regular performances in Chichester and Watford. Overseas tours have included Japan, China, Abu Dhabi, Sweden and the USA. We also make recordings, available on the Dutton, Chandos and Decca labels.
In 2016 we are bringing BBC Music’s Ten Pieces initiative to secondary school-age children in Birmingham and Bristol. Also for BBC Music, the BBC CO performed at the second BBC Music Awards and appeared 27 star performers in the film and CD release of God Only Knows.
