Cornelius Meister

Cornelius Meister, born in Hannover in 1980, was appointed Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2010. He conducts a wide concert and opera repertoire, which includes – apart from the standard works (Der Ring des Nibelungen) and rarely played works (including all the symphonies by Martinů) – the cooperation with original instrument orchestras (2014 Die Zauberflöte at the opera in Zurich) and a number of premieres.

He has conducted concerts with the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam, Santa Cecilia Rom, National Symphony Orchestra Washington, Helsinki Philharmonic, Tonhalle Zürich, Yomiuri Nippon Tokyo, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris, Ensemble Intercontemporain Paris, the German Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the NDR Symphony Orchestra Hamburg and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

In the early years of his international career, Cornelius Meister appeared at many important opera houses: aged only 21, he gave his debut at the Hamburg State Opera. Since then he has worked at State opera houses such as those in Vienna and Munich, at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, at La Scala in Milan, at the Semperoper Dresden and at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, in Zurich, Copenhagen, San Francisco and Tokyo.

Cornelius Meister studied piano and conducting at Hannover University with Konrad Meister, Martin Brauß and Eiji Oue, as well as at the Salzburg Mozarteum with Dennis Russell Davies, Jorge Rotter and Karl Kamper. From 2005 until 2012, he held the position of music director of the city of Heidelberg. In this time he received a prize for the best concert programme from the German Institute of Music Publishers. In the years 2007 and 2010 he also received the „young ears“-prize and one from the German music council for music mediation work with teenagers and children. As a pianist, he has given concerts in Europe and the USA. Most recently Cornelius Meister play-conducted works by Grieg, Liszt, Gershwin (Rhapsody in Blue), Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Pärt (Credo).
